Rendering of the new Broadway pedestrian area at Herald Square that will be implemented this summer as a pilot program of the NYC Dept of Transportation.
There's something for everyone in the 34th Street District: great shopping and dining, one-of-a-kind sights, comfortable hotels, and world-class sports and entertainment. With a total daily ridership of nearly 600,000, Penn Station is the country's busiest transit hub. Founded in 1992, the 34th Street Partnership is a non-profit Business Improvement District (BID) that manages a 35-block area in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. The Partnership designs and implements major streetscape improvements, provides security, sanitation, tourist and retail services.
In addition, the BID also manages Herald & Greeley Square Parks. These programs and services are funded principally by a special assessment on commercial properties within the district. Funds totaling $9.3M are collected by the city and returned in full to the Partnership. The total revenue budget in FY09 is $10.2M.
The Partnership is one of the most active BIDs in NYC. Plans to convert Broadway at Herald Square to a pedestrian plaza will be implemented in summer 2009. The BID will play a major role in managing the amenities in the plaza, as well as programming the space with activities. Also, check out the 34th Street Partnership blog at www.fashionherald.org and meet with the Online Editor to discuss this trend in retail PR.
The Partnership is working closely with New Jersey Transit as it plans for a new station deep under 34th Street, from Herald Square to Eighth Avenue. The station's concourse will allow passengers to walk underground to subways, PATH trains, and Penn Station. This $8.7 billion project includes a new Hudson River Tunnel and improvements to tracks and train yards in New Jersey.
